Essential Strategies for Navigating a Gluten-Free Lifestyle
Going gluten-free can be a challenging journey, especially for those diagnosed with celiac disease. In an informative discussion, several key tips are highlighted to help individuals navigate this dietary change effectively. One of the most crucial steps is understanding the sources of gluten, which can be found in many everyday foods. By familiarizing oneself with these sources, individuals can make more informed choices when shopping and preparing meals.
Another important aspect of transitioning to a gluten-free diet involves learning to read food labels carefully. Many packaged foods contain hidden gluten ingredients, so individuals should become adept at identifying these terms. Additionally, it’s essential to consider cross-contamination, particularly when dining out or sharing kitchen space with gluten-containing foods. Taking these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of inadvertently consuming gluten.
Embrace the Journey: Navigating Life Without Gluten with Flavor and Fun!
Were you just diagnosed with celiac disease and you do not know where to start come along with me and I’m going to show you some big changes or small changes that I’m making to my routine to My daily life because my celiac disease is very sensitive so if you are very sensitive like I am come along and see the changes that I’m making step number.
One I know I should have done this ages ago I should have done this two three years ago when I found out okay but I was scared I thought if I do this it’s going to just contaminate everything okay I’ll show you what I’m talking about T I still have a bag of flour I have just kept it there not touched it.
Anything surrounding it is just stayed there I use this baking soda and literally there’s this line I just touch everything on this side that does not move I was scared if I go and take it out it’s going to poof and it’s going to spread all over all of my stuff okay that’s why I have left it there for almost 3 years with finding out how.
Sensitive I am to wheat gluten I’ve decided that definitely has to go and I’m going to show you guys how to safely go about this let’s clear a space to put all of our gluten-free goodies that should be good enough obviously if you don’t have much baking supplies and you’re in the same situation as me uh you don’t really need that much space I.
Honestly don’t have that much but I’m going to probably just take everything out of the cupboard aside from the flower but we’ll also need some cleaning supplies this should be good before I do anything else like that’s just the bottom cupboard I’m going to go ahead and just compost all the old stuff although I honestly don’t think uh you.
Can compost Crisco so that one might just be for the garbage oh yeah 2023 nice everything that I pulled out was gluten-free I would not be pouring anything into the compost that has gluten in it okay it’s just expired or I know I’m not going to use it because it could be contaminated so this is what we.
Are left with from the bottom shelf now I can grab the rest of everything oh this looks bad this is so weird I’ve never seen cornmeal be like ew I think it’s moldy ew so there’s our top is free I just had a few bowls down in there too um and then that is what’s left honestly like it scares me because all of that I don’t know I’m assuming it’s sugar or.
Like starch powder stuff like that cuz I always had kept my flower in this spot on top as you can see on top but I’m still like did I even wipe this area clean when I first switched over I don’t know and I know for a fact that bag has vital wheat gluten in it which is like literally literally those are like the most dangerous things to me so I don’t.
Even know if these items there I might just like get rid of them because they’re literally touching the bag but step number two grab our trusty Dusty Lysol wipes we’re going to wipe everything down in case any of the outsides of the packaging got any type of flower residue on them okay actually the baking soda I’m definitely I wiped.
It down but I’m definitely going to just transfer this into a tupperw container with a lid instead of having it potentially open like this clay so generously took the whole bag of flour out he took it outside to put it in the garbage and then he wiped everything down in here with a Lysol wipe and then he sprayed it all with Lysol and wiped.
It again and then I just quickly took another Lysol wipe went around the very edges just to make sure everything is all good it looks good feeling good now we just got to put everything back in taada look how spacious y’all once I get a new hand mixer I can definitely just fit it right in here maybe even other utensils but for now this is our step.
Number one we are done step number two is cutting riskier Foods out of my diet Now by risky I mean the risk is so small most people wouldn’t have to cut it out that are gluten-free or Celia back okay for me though anything that says may contain gluten has to be taken out of my diet unfortunately and also oats um not that they’re have gluten but I just.
Can’t have oats so we’ll just lob that in with that to sum it up I’m cutting out oats that’s gluten-free oats too mushrooms because I’ve seen they can be grown in hay or straw whatever um I don’t really know how accurate that could be that it would transfer onto the mushrooms but for the time being we’re going to cut out mushrooms last but not.
Least lentils these are not a permanent thing that I’m cutting out I have just recently obviously these ones I don’t know because they’re in a Ziploc bag that I have put them in now my red lentils that I put in soups chili all the things like that I looked at the packaging when I made chili last week and guess what it says may contain wheat.
Gluten well maybe that’s where that 18 number is coming from Over the 12 limit that I’m supposed to be at for the amount of gluten that’s in my body until I can find lentils that do not say may contain we’re just going to cut them out I’m going to be reading labels more carefully and going over things that I have already been eating and deemed safe.
And making sure they don’t say may contain on them or process in the same facility anything that says that being cut out can’t have it no more that’s it for number two now number three if you watch one of my previous videos about my celiac disease you’ll know I’m so sensitive I need my own pots and pans so my pots are stainless steel so they’re.
Fine but my non-stick pans that have had gluten in them previously I’m not going to use them anymore in addition to the new pots and pans this is kind of an extra step here too that I didn’t think about right away I need to get rid of any utensils cooking utensils that are absorbent that are made of wood that have been used to make pasta or scrape.
Anything that had gluten in it off of a pan all of these lovely wooden utensils this one is my go-to for every single baking recipe I have made and it definitely has probably locked in gluten um I don’t use any wood cutting boards I only use plastic and we don’t ever put bread on them so I’m fine with that what is absorbent it can have absorbed gluten.
In it we’re just trying to be extra safe so we’re going to go shopping we have arrived at our destination Canadian Tire if you’re not Canadian welcome to Canadian Tire oh my God you guys I’ve been waiting I’ve been waiting for the Kitchenaid hand mixers to go on sale because I broke my really shitty whatever $15 one I’m going to.
Have to grab this okay actually um this Chef set is five pieces and we need new tongs cuz our last one’s broke and it has a spatula a spoon a ladle and then I think there’s another like a slauter spoon and another spoon in there so that actually would be perfect and I believe it’s plastic too so good for me these are my favorite non-stick pans I don’t.
Know if they’re like the best healthwise but um they seem to be the best nonstick I found that last the longest and they’re on sale so I need a small one 20 bucks I’ll get that one and then there’s quite a few this one’s like a medium sized but there’s this nice big one for 30 bucks I really want to get like a a new grill pan too but it’s not.
On sale so we’ll wait okay wait I didn’t see this one it’s only $10 and it’s really little it says for eggs but like I use these for heating up leftovers or like my bread a lot of the time and I think that might be the perfect size oh my God y’all look it GL yes I’m so happy and I can just stick to the regular crust I not have to spend $5 on.
Toothpaste all the crust ones well that I’m spying say glutenfree I’m so sad and also confused because my favorite hash brown brand four ingredients like literally they’re so delicious Cavendish literally on one of the sides here I was just like looking around at the other things that it says on it and.
It said that it’s processed in the same facility as fish wheat milk eggs all this crap and I’m like technically maybe I shouldn’t be eating these and I’m like no just potatoes but you know what’s weird this is where my confusion comes in my favorite fries by them the pub style ones do not have that same labeling make it make sense how does one.
Product manufactur in the same facility but the other product does not and they they make all like hash brown fry all that kind of stuff weird but maybe they make so many fries that they’re all in like the Fry category and there’s not anything else in that facility but then like the hash BRS are maybe made in a different facility with other stuff that.
Does have wheat I don’t know anyways I’m just happy it’s not on this bag because I’m going to count that as I can eat that the fries I still have fries guys one more more thing y’all your dish cloths what you wash your dishes with is very important if that cloth is washing stuff with gluten on it and then washing your stuff that can contaminate and that.
Can be a big no no so we are making sure to have two separate ones just to be safe this is going the extra mile y’all but it’s necessary for me okay something else that I didn’t think about um I know our can opener is broken but but then I’m thinking the more and more I think about it I’m like this has definitely opened stuff with gluten in it and it’s.
A bit Rusty and I’m like could that I know we wash it but like could that this was on sale for 10 bucks at Walmart and I was like you know what we might as well just spend the money and get like an actual nice one hopefully this is nice all right y’all we are back home now and I wanted to show you I took a picture of the other lentils that was.
The brand that I bought I’ll put it here what I was previously buying which I looked at the green lentils and they didn’t say that they make contain so I thought that was weird but I didn’t end up buying green lentils anyways I found these ones compliments which is Canadian brand hell yeah I’ve been trying to buy all.
Canadian to keep it in our country y’all um other than some fruits and vegetables that obviously we can’t find here and anyways these ones say 100% Canadian lentils and nowhere on the packaging I could find that it said make contain wheat or gluten or processing same facility nothing so I decided to get them I may change the way that I am.
Prepping them and since that doesn’t say make contain I’m going to just cross my fingers and you know that’s the best that we can do I’m educating myself the best I can this is probably the final last step I have already been doing this y’all um because there’s so few places that I trust to eat out at anyways but I was told I’m not allowed to eat out for.
The next four months till my next doctor’s appointment so no no more eating out as well to wrap up this video all of the steps that I’m taking now are extreme um in my opinion they are if you are very very sensitive these are not something that like the regular person that goes gluten fur Celiac needs to probably go that this far but it’s a.
Really good reminder refresher if you forgot or it’s really good information for someone that may live with someone with celiac disease so that you can make sure that you’re making it an safe environment for them to be in number one ensuring all of your food is in fact glutenfree that includes the make contains get rid of everything that says.
Make contain number two I don’t know if this is going to be in order but whatever getting rid of oh any gluten that’s in your house that could potentially contaminate or separating them further so like my flour I got rid of that um anything that was made containing I got rid of um anything with gluten like really truly separate them.
Everywhere number three switching out pots and pans so making sure anything that may have been contaminated like a non-stick pan that is like not that nonstick anymore if it has gluten in it get a new one or those ones can be only for gluten and then you buy a new one and it’s only for gluten-free items you can keep it in a separate cupo whatever.
Along with that is going to be the dish cloths so making sure you have your own dish rag to wash all your gluten-free stuff and if anything with gluten is washed it has its own cloth as well making sure any of your other products like toothpastes or makeups other care products actually can contain gluten switching them to a different product.
That doesn’t have it not eating out anymore for the time being anyways or maybe eating out less if you are in my boat where you’re like H so just lowering that risk and not eating out as much um and only at places that are like very very very safe and conscious about it it wraps up into the pots and pans things as well is if you have any.
Absorbent material um utensils or hes plates things like that made from bamboo or wood cutting boards get rid of them if they’ve ever touched gluten replace them with plastic or silicone like all my spatulas are silicone I have a couple other things that are silicone utensil so make sure anything that is absorbent like wood that was touching gluten gets.
Thrown in the garbage I hope you guys learned something I hope you are not as sensitive as I am I hope that this helped anyone that may be confused of like how serious it really is to switch everything over or to not even know where to begin if this video helped you like down below and don’t forget to subscribe and I will see you in the next.
Video bye
