Is Coffee Safe for Those with Gluten Intolerance?
Coffee is naturally gluten-free, but there are some factors to consider when determining if your cup of joe is truly safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. For example, cross-contamination can occur if coffee beans are processed in facilities that also handle gluten-containing products. Filtering out the gluten: Enjoying a worry-free cup of coffee
good morning it’s coffee time it’s Sunday morning still here in my PJs and uh just enjoying this first cup did sleep in a little bit nice rain going on outside that window this morning which was nice and peaceful um if you hear a dog making some noises over here she’s.
Laying down next to me or trying to um I thought that I would talk about coffee this morning and um anybody that’s followed my Channel or any of my content knows that I am a coffee drinker I love coffee I love the taste of coffee I drink regular coffee I drink deaf coffee I drink it hot hot I drink it cold I drink it black I drink it with.
Stuff added to it uh so I just love coffee now a big question maybe and I’ve seen a little bit of this is is coffee gluten-free and some people might think that that’s silly at first but it’s actually a good question so coffee is naturally gluten-free like the coffee beans and whatnot but as you know if you’re.
Someone that has to deal with eating gluten-free it’s just not always that simple and the same would go unfortunately for your coffee so would I think twice about making myself a cup of plain coffee at home no um even if I go out and they brew coffee I’m going to have a cup of black coffee or maybe I’ll just add some.
Um half and half to it or something like that I’m comfortable doing that I am even comfortable with going to Starbucks and ordering a hot coffee like a plain hot coffee or even an iced coffee with a splash of heavy cream or something like that okay um I think that most people maybe not most people I don’t know I think people generally get that.
It’s what you’re adding to that coffee with a couple of exceptions it’s what you’re adding to that coffee that might cause you a problem so um let’s talk about the basic coffee first so if you have a basic just regular cup of coffee um with nothing in it yeah it probably almost certainly is 100% gluten-free could.
Stuff happen to contaminate it yes anything that you eat or put in or on your body could be contaminated with anything else but let’s talk about the likelihood of that coffee is is probably going to be a safe option um if it’s just the black coffee with nothing in it when you start getting into your flavored coffees even the ones that.
You’re Brewing yourself okay whether you’re getting a bag of the um the coffee grinds or you use K Cups like I use you do run a risk that they’re um could be gluten containing ingredients in the way that they flavor those coffees generally you can go on to the website of the company that makes that particular coffee and they will tell you.
Um like for instance for a while I was drinking the um what is it the bones coffee they make a lot of really tasty flavored coffees and you can go in there and it’ll tell you right there that they don’t use gluten containing ingredients to um flavor their coffees there are a lot of brands that will give you that information okay so that’s where you.
Need to kind of start looking out and making sure even more so than that is when you start adding stuff into the coffee are you adding creamers are you adding any of your own flavorings or um I don’t know any toppings or anything like that like if you’re making like fancier coffee drinks that’s when you got to be careful are there gluten.
Containing ingredients in those Toppings is there um you know malt in those toppings um like barley malt in those toppings um are you adding any flavorings that are thickened with anything or you know you just you just got to double check and make sure that that stuff’s gluten-free now if you’re going to go out to a coffee shop and.
Have coffee well I think that that’s where that that’s probably where it gets even trickier and where you might have more of a problem let’s take Starbucks for example and don’t get me wrong I love my cup of iced coffee from Starbucks or my hot coffee with just some cream in it or whatever but unfortunately they’re preparing a lot of.
Drinks that are a lot more involved there you know sharing equipment and whatnot and you can see that just by walking into Starbucks or or any other place for that matter so if they just prepared something something that contain gluten and then you know maybe that um blender copper whatever whatever they’re using to to make your coffee.
Isn’t cleaned properly or whatever I mean that’s that’s self-explanatory that you could run into a problem right so I I don’t do those drinks anymore I didn’t really do them much before maybe a little bit maybe I was a little bit of a PSL girl and I think that’s actually one that’s technically safe but I stay away from that I stay away from all the extra.
Sugars and and all of that just because I don’t feel good in general but you know that’s um if if you like that stuff and you want to go for it that’s awesome just make sure or double check with the Barista or you know make it yourself at home so you know for sure so it’s just another one of those things with being gluten-free where the answer.
Is just not that simple you can go from the simple is coffee in general gluten-free yes but when you start start changing it around and making fancier drinks and adding stuff to it well you’re going to have to be careful and there is just one more little thing about coffee that I’ve learned over the years um I do okay with coffee but.
Apparently a lot of people that have Celiac or gluten sensitivities do not like their system just does not like coffee in the same way it doesn’t like gluten so that is always something to consider that it might not even be that there’s gluten in that coffee no matter what you’re doing to it but your body just does not like that unfortunately um.
So there’s always that but it’s just a little something to consider especially when you’re going out and getting a cup of coffee or a coffee drink or whatever just always uh double check so that you’re sure always lots to think about in this world right um but keep tuning in and I’ll I’ll try to help and uh as always if anybody has any questions.
Comments ideas let me know I’ll talk to you next time bye
