The Truth About Gut Symptoms and Gluten Intolerance
What if we’ve been lied to about the dangers of gluten this whole time? Over the last decade, we’ve essentially been told that being healthy means being gluten-free. The popularity of the Paleo diet reinforced this idea, urging us to eat like our caveman ancestors. However, the rise of gluten-free products has led to a widespread fear of bread and pasta, primarily due to gluten. But is non-celiac gluten sensitivity actually real?
This video explores the latest research on gluten and its effects on our digestive health. It delves into the reasons why many people feel better when going gluten-free, even if it’s not necessarily the gluten that’s causing the improvement. The video challenges common misconceptions and provides insights into what we should be focusing on in our diets, especially for those dealing with chronic digestive issues that gluten-free diets are meant to alleviate.
The Gut Truth: Debunking the Gluten Intolerance Myth
What if we’ve been lied to about the dangers of gluten this whole time over the last decade we’ve essentially been told to be healthy is to be gluten-free which really started to pick up steam with the paleo diet where we were told to eat like our caveman ancestors remember that diet that everyone said they would do forever yeah just like the.
Mammoths that went extinct too now there are glutenfree products available for just about everything you can think of it even gets its own aisle in many supermarkets and frankly people are just scared of bread and pasta because of the gluten it was even a dating website for gluten-free people yes I already checked no it doesn’t exist anymore after all of.
This it turns out gluten isn’t even the problem in this video we’re going to look at the latest research on why I’m saying this then also what we should be doing instead with our diet especially if you’re living with symptoms that going gluten-free is supposed to help with like chronic digestive issues for example good day folks my name is Joe.
Leech and I’m a university trained dietician specializing in Digestive Health my company diet verse disease is the world’s leading online dition company working primarily with digestive disorders here’s what we’ll cover in the video today we look at what is gluten just a very quick refresher for those who don’t know is non Cate gluten.
Sensitivity or gluten intolerance even real now these terms are used interchangeably the gluten-free bread study and the musle bar study the real cause of persistent digestive symptoms and for those wondering why gluten-free makes you feel better even though it’s not the gluten then because I know many of you are thinking I feel amazing since.
I went glutenfree this guy is freaking I know I believe you not the part but part that you feel better eating gluten free but it’s not what you think it is and it’s not your fault that you believe what you do because that’s all we’ve been told the past 10 years and this will all make sense by the end of the video for the rec this video is.
Not for the 1% of people diagnosed with celiac disease gluten very much is the major problem for you it is a protein that can cause inflammation and damage to the lining of the small intestine and because gluten is found in certain grains like wheat Rye barley those with celiac disease need to strictly avoid foods made from those ingredients like.
Bread pasta this video is for the other 99% of people who do not have celiac disease but feel gluten free fixes their symptoms the majority of these people have self diagnosed as having non-celiac gluten sensitivity but is that really a thing fortunately researchers have designed experiments to test exactly this because if it is real then great we.
Can start really educating on the topic and promoting awareness right but if it’s not then what the hell are we all doing so this study was published in February 2024 and it’s super fascinating because it wanted to test if the fact that we think we eating gluten is what contributes to symptoms or not so said another way because I believe this.
Sandwich causes me symptoms because having that thought itself cause the sympt so for this study they had 84 participants without celiac disease but who identified as gluten and Toren and they were split into groups and told one thing and then F none group one were told they were eating gluten as regular bread and then ate regular bread.
Containing gluten so there’s no plot twist for them group two was told they were eating gluten but actually ate gluten- free bread group three were told they were eating gluten-free bread but actually ate regular bread with gluten in group four was told they were eating gluten-free bread and they did indeed eat.
Gluten-free bread the kicker is that this was double blinded which means neither the participants nor the researchers knew who was assigned to which group until afterwards they do this to eliminate bias in the results so what do you think happened each day the participants ate the bread they were asked how they felt after 8 hours people.
In group one who thought they were eating gluten and bread containing gluten reported the worst gastrointestinal symptoms okay fair enough because they thought they eating gluten and then they did eat gluten people in group two who thought they were eating gluten but were in fact eating gluten- free bread they didn’t.
Feel as bad as group one but almost and they certainly felt much worse than group three and four and this was even though they were eating gluten-free bread remember group three and four they thought they were eating gluten-free bread and so they didn’t report as many symptoms remember the people in group three.
Even though they thought they were eating gluten-free bread they were actually eating gluten they still didn’t report symptoms really so beting gluten appears to make some people feel a bit worse so we can’t ignore that and I will get to that a bit later because that’s the people in group one but it seems like just thinking you’re eating gluten.
Has a very big impact even if you’re not eating it does cause symptoms now this is actually a very well researched phenomenon called the nobo effect it’s a situation in which a person develops side effects or symptoms that can occur simply because that person believes they could occur like a self-fulfilling prophecy so imagine you tell your friend.
That touching a certain flower might give them a rush even what if they believe you they might start feeling itchy and and think they’re going to get a rush because they expect it to happen you might have had that similar itchy feeling on your scalp if someone mentions headl or itchy skin when you’re told there’s been bed bugs in that hotel.
You’re staying in but there aren’t any in your natural bed right this is what is happening with so many people eating gluten because so is basically scar out of so that’s certainly thought provoking but is it really just all in our head because a lot of people will say just can’t be and you know what I agree I think there is more to it than that and.
That study just now did find those who believe they at gluten and were eating gluten did have the lare symptoms which brings me to the next study because that one wasn’t actually the first of its kind in Norway something similar was done but gives us more clues as to if there’s something different about gluten-free food that genuinely is.
Helping in symptoms because we don’t think it’s actually the gluten so let me take you to that first study in Norway where researchers have rounded up 60 subjects who identify as gluten they notied that a gluten-free diet relieves their symptoms show and they don’t have celac disease it’s the same as the other study the researchers had come up with a.
Unique plan to test if it really was the gluten or not they created three different types of musar musar one contained gluten musar two contained fructans now that’s a type of fat compound known to trigger symptoms more on that later musar 3 contained no gluten or fru it was a placebo it has no known triggers for Digestive issues now.
All the bars look the same so the disant couldn’t tell them apart and they weren’t told anything about them so removing that no seow effect they didn’t know what they got or what they thought they and they had to eat each bar for seven days in a row report sys now can you guess which bar was best tolerated worst tolerated overall symptoms were by.
Far the worst the mus bar with fru Dan that’s Bar number two second worst for symptoms was the placebo bar which had nothing added to it and the musly bar that contained the gluten which was Bar number one was actually tolerated best so the bar without any known triggers caused more symptoms in the bar with glut and the bar high in fru hands was.
Worse than all of them and so that is a big clue about what you need to consider if you believe you have non Celiac gluten sensitivity if you do feel like glutenfree makes you feel better and Al a clue about what we would recommend you do if you have persisent gut issues but before we get to all that it’s clear to me that the no sibo effect of GL has.
Just become one of the biggest problems that right thinking it’s going to cause issues is causing issues and it all makes sense when you consider that gluten has become the scapegoat for so many health conditions it’s pushed by the media celebrities who don’t know any better and certain diet gurus who also unfortunately don’t know any better in.
Food companies too which I think is the main driver now I mean I mean they’re cashing in on a trend by labeling everything is gluten print which I don’t blame them I get it the market wants what the market wants but do we really need gluten-free water I mean what gone are the days of actress sfil Ren who famously credited her beauty and her.
Figure to Spaghetti right and while these days the pastor Crown has been handed over to actor Stanley Tucci which I think is great for people to see that you can eat gluten and not feel bad about it I’m finding that in everyday life the consensus is still gluten-free is the healthy alternative when it really is not typically the case but I’m.
Finding that in everyday life the consensus is still that gluten-free is the healthier alternative when it really is not typically the case but so let’s address the elephant in the room if you are eating gluten-free for gut symptoms it’s not actually the gluten that is issued now as I hinted in the Norwegian M study it’s not removing the gluten.
That alleviates the digestive symptoms it’s the removal of fructans which are a food compound that are removed as well in the process of removing gluten so by choosing gluten-free breads pastas gluten-free cereal people have inadvertently been cutting out their fruit tance as well which leads to symptom relief which incorrectly.
Indicates that gluten is the problem in an actual fact it’s a fru so what are fructan they are a type of carbohydrate often referred to as fmats they’re one of the most common fmats to cause issues in those who are sensitive and FRS occur in large quantities in wheat barley Ry garlic onions chickpea dates prunes raisins and watermelons now you may be.
Worried that this is just another thing to think about or that it’s even more limiting than gluten-free I get that but actually a gluten-free diet is more restrictive because there are gluten containing foods that are low in fructans and actually should be okay for most everyone to eat for example sad bread it has gluten but its fermentation.
Process removes almost all the fructans soy sauce also is high in gluten and low in fructans beer comes to mind as well the point is many foods that are off limits on a gluten-free diet are unnecessary to restrict the majority people the second reason why it’s more restrictive is that a gluten-free diet never ends it’s like for life right it’s.
Absolute by nature in that you are meant to be 100% gluten-free hence the name glutenfree now if you’re focusing on fructans and namely a low fod map diet it’s not as restrictive overall because it’s a temporary diet you don’t restrict all Ms forever there’s a method to the madness you could say and unlike gluten-free it’s not absolute it’s.
Called a low format diet not a no fap it’s actually evidence-based based on actual science if you’re still unsure about your perceived gluten sensitivity because it is genely hard to question our beliefs I get that let me ask you this think about if you ever had excessive gas or bloating or diarrhea several hours after eating a lot of.
Garlic or onion or chickpeas maybe it was hommus dates or a lot of watermelon they are naturally gluten-free foods but they are full of fru Tans and they are causing digestive issues even though they don’t have gluten and it’s the same compound in wheat that is causing those issues but we’ve just been told it’s GL and it’s not if you want some resources.
To download about doing a low map diet I’ll link to some of our guides below and I recommend you stick around to watch my next video because it goes into more detail about fodmaps the low fod map diet and how to start I hope you found this useful and thank you for watching
